Does roof rejuvenation work? Here’s what the testing shows.
You shouldn't have to take our word for it. The treatment we use was developed from university research and tested by an independent, accredited asphalt laboratory. Here are the results, including what the testing didn't show.

What sets it apart
Not just another roof oil
University research published in a peer-reviewed journal in 2025 found two things that set this treatment apart from ordinary oil-based rejuvenators.
Bonds with the asphalt, not just a coating
FTIR, NMR and thermal (DSC) lab analysis
Many rejuvenators simply soften asphalt, and that effect fades as the oil works its way out. Iowa State University researchers found this treatment's reactive ingredient being used up as it reacted with the aged asphalt, forming new chemical bonds. A plain soy-oil treatment tested side by side softened the shingles too, but they still cracked when bent and let flames spread farther.

Flexibility restored to nearly new
3-point bend testing on 15+ year-old shingles
The same study tested shingles taken off two roofs after more than 15 years. Aging had made them far stiffer and more brittle than new shingles. After treatment, the aged shingles were back to nearly new flexibility, and they bent without the cracking seen in untreated samples.

The problem
Why aging shingles fail
Asphalt shingles stay flexible because of oils in the asphalt. Sun and heat oxidize those oils over time, and the shingle turns stiff and brittle. Brittle shingles crack more easily and lose the granules that shield them from UV. Rejuvenation is designed to put flexibility back into that aged asphalt.
Stage 1
Newer shingles
Oils in the asphaltHigh
Asphalt is rich in oils. Shingles flex with heat and cold and hold their granules.
Stage 2
Aging shingles
Oils in the asphaltDeclining
Sun and heat draw oils out over time. Shingles start to dry, fade and lose some granules.
Stage 3
Brittle shingles
Oils in the asphaltLow
With fewer oils, shingles become stiff and brittle, and more prone to cracking and granule loss.
How it was tested
Real aged shingles, standard test methods
The most recent independent study, completed in 2024, was set up to reflect a real roof rather than fresh shingles in a lab.
Real aged shingles, removed from a Florida home after about 13 years on the roof.
Shingles installed on small test roof decks built with standard roofing materials.
Treated at the manufacturer's recommended rate, then cured outdoors for 72 hours.
Compared side by side with untreated shingles, using standard ASTM and EPA test methods.
The results
What the lab found
Granule loss: nearly twice as high untreated
ASTM D4977 granule adhesion
Granules are the sand-like coating that shields asphalt from the sun. Untreated shingles lost 13.2% of their granules in the test. Treated shingles lost 7.1% to 8.0%.
Untreated13.2%
Treated7.1–8.0%
Granule loss by weight. Lower is better. The light green segment shows the range across the formulations tested.
More flexible shingles
ASTM D3462 pliability and ASTM D5147 bend tests
Aged shingles crack when bent because the asphalt has gone brittle. In the 2024 testing, treated shingles bent without cracking at about 21°F, compared with about 27°F for untreated shingles. The colder a shingle can bend, the more flexible it is.
Untreated
27°F
Treated
21°F
Lowest temperature the shingle bent without cracking. Lower is better.
In earlier 2021 testing, treated aged shingles passed a 55°F bend test that untreated shingles from the same roof failed.
Class A fire limit met, with less flame spread
ASTM E108 spread-of-flame test
An oil-based treatment raises a fair question about fire. In spread-of-flame testing, every treated roof deck stayed within the Class A limit, and flames spread less on treated shingles than on untreated ones.
Untreated53 in
Treated34–44 in
Flame spread in inches. Lower is better. The dashed line marks the 72-inch Class A limit.
Clean runoff, near-zero VOCs
EPA methods 8270, 8082, 24 and 6010
The treatment is water-based and has no odor. In independent testing it measured just 0.02% VOCs. A treated test roof was then put through 100 hours of simulated rain, and the runoff water was collected and analyzed: no PAHs or PCBs were detected, and the lab found no indication of harmful environmental effects.
VOCs (EPA 24)
0.02%
Volatile organic compounds: chemicals that evaporate into the air, like the fumes from fresh paint or solvents. They can irritate eyes and lungs and add to smog.
PAHs (EPA 8270)
None detected
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: compounds found in coal tar, soot and some asphalt products. Some are linked to cancer and are harmful to fish and wildlife.
PCBs (EPA 8082)
None detected
Polychlorinated biphenyls: industrial chemicals banned in the U.S. since 1979 because they are toxic and linger in the environment for decades.
Chlorides
None detected
Salts that can harm plants and soil in large amounts.
Straight talk
What the testing didn't show
Some companies in this industry promise hail protection or decades of added life. We only tell you what the testing supports.
Hail resistance did not change
In hail impact testing, treated and untreated aged shingles performed the same. Rejuvenation is not hail protection, and we will never sell it that way.
Lab results are a snapshot
These tests measured sample shingles shortly after treatment. They do not measure how long a treatment lasts on a real roof, which depends on its age, condition and exposure.
It does not repair damage
Rejuvenation helps aging shingles that are still sound. It does not fix leaks, missing shingles or damaged decking.

Safety
Safe use around your home
The treatment is designed for safe use around homes. Here's what that looks like on the day of your treatment.
Our crew wears gloves and eye protection and avoids breathing spray mist, as the safety data sheet directs for the concentrate.
The concentrate is diluted with water before it is sprayed on the roof, and we keep it out of storm drains.
The treatment is typically dry to the touch in about 30 minutes, ready for foot traffic in about an hour, and fully cured within 1 to 2 hours in warm, dry weather. Keep people and pets clear until it is dry.
Common questions
Does roof rejuvenation actually work?
Yes, on aging asphalt shingles that are still sound. In peer-reviewed Iowa State University research, the treatment we use brought shingles that had been on a roof for more than 15 years back to nearly new flexibility. In independent lab testing on 13-year-old shingles, untreated shingles shed nearly twice as many granules as treated shingles from the same roof. It won’t fix leaks or damage, which is why every job starts with a free assessment.
How is this different from other roof rejuvenation sprays?
Many rejuvenators are plain oils that soften the asphalt for a while, then fade as the oil works its way out. Our treatment is designed to chemically bond with the aged asphalt. University lab analysis confirmed that reaction, and when a plain soy oil was tested side by side, it softened the shingles too, but they still cracked when bent and let flames spread farther.
Is it worth it compared with replacing my roof?
For a roof that still has life in it, usually yes. A treatment costs a fraction of a new roof, is typically done in a single visit, and keeps your shingles out of the landfill. One treatment is designed to support your shingles for about 5 to 6 years, and every treatment comes with our 5-year warranty in writing.
Does an oil-based treatment make my roof more flammable?
No. In independent ASTM E108 fire testing, every treated roof kept its Class A fire rating, the highest rating for roofing, and flames spread less on treated shingles than on untreated ones.
Is the treatment safe around my home, kids and pets?
It is designed for safe use around homes. The treatment is water-based, has no odor and measured just 0.02% VOCs, and independent testing found no PAHs or PCBs in rain runoff from treated shingles. It is USDA Certified Biobased, with 96% of its content from renewable sources. We just ask that people and pets stay clear until it dries, typically about 30 minutes in warm, dry weather.
Will rejuvenation protect my roof from hail?
No treatment can honestly promise that, and we won’t. In lab hail testing, treated and untreated shingles performed the same. What rejuvenation does is keep aging shingles flexible and holding onto their granules, which is what keeps a roof doing its job day to day.
