The short answer
A coating adds a new layer on top of the roof. Rejuvenation soaks into asphalt shingles and replaces the oils they lose to sun and heat, so the roof still looks like a shingle roof. In Phoenix, coatings are the usual maintenance for foam and flat roofs; rejuvenation is made for aging asphalt shingles.
How roof coatings work
Roof coatings, such as acrylic, silicone and elastomeric products, are painted or sprayed on to form a film over the roof surface. Many are white or light-colored to reflect sunlight. In the Valley, recoating is standard maintenance for spray foam and other flat or low-slope roofs.
How rejuvenation works
Rejuvenation is absorbed into the asphalt in the shingles instead of sitting on top. The treatment we use is designed to chemically bond with aged asphalt: university lab analysis confirmed that reaction, and in Iowa State University testing it brought shingles from roofs more than 15 years old back to nearly new flexibility. In independent lab testing, untreated shingles shed nearly twice as many granules as treated ones.
Because it works inside the shingle, rejuvenation doesn’t change your roof’s materials, style or color scheme the way a coating can. That also makes it simpler if your HOA has rules about roof appearance.
Side by side
| Compare | Roof coating | Rejuvenation |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Forms a film on top of the roof | Soaks into the shingles and bonds with aged asphalt |
| Typical roofs | Foam, flat and low-slope roofs | Aging asphalt shingle roofs |
| Look | Often changes the color, frequently to white | Still looks like a shingle roof |
| Fire rating | Depends on the product | Class A kept in independent ASTM E108 testing |
Which one fits your roof
If you have a foam or flat roof, a coating is the right kind of maintenance, and it isn’t a service we offer. If you have an asphalt shingle roof that is drying out but still sound, rejuvenation is designed for exactly that. Whatever you choose, ask the provider for independent test data and the fire rating results for the product going on your roof.
